HOLISTIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES
WHAT IS HOLISTIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?
Holistic occupational therapy provides clients with a bridge between traditional occupational therapy services and integrative and complementary practices engaging mind, body, emotion and spirit for a unique and enriching approach health and wellness. Integrative practices such as Transformative Touch (somatic therapy), Reiki, mindfulness meditation, breathwork, and guided meditation are provided as part of a comprehensive Occupational Therapy Plan of Care when indicated. These approaches are used to decrease the impact of conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD and experiences of oppression that may limit therapy progress. Integrative practices drive a more person-centered treatment plan and often reveal the physical manifestations of past trauma. When illness or injury make it difficulty to perform life roles, personal self care or mobility, occupational therapy services are considered medically necessity and are covered by medical insurance.
Occupational therapy consists of a comprehensive evaluation of a client's strengths and impairments to determine a plan of care. The OT and client collaborate to set treatment goals and the treatment plan is carried out over a determined number of therapy sessions required to meet these goals. Treatment is provided using individualized activities and exercises that target the needs and interests of the client. Special attention is placed on determining personal interests that may contribute to the healing process. For example, if a client enjoys gardening as a hobby, treatment may center around gardening tasks using wrist weight and ergonomic tools for strengthening and endurance. Bending, standing, reaching and stooping while performing gardening can become the "exercise" that carries over to greater independence with bathing, dressing or grooming tasks impacted by an injury. Other times, an individualized exercise plan may be created to strengthen and improve functional endurance for activities such as shopping, housekeeping, walking the dog or other leisure activity that adds to the quality of life. Ultimately, it is the role of the occupational therapist to provide clients with the skills and tools needed to optimize independence, safety and ability to live a meaningful and productive life.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT
Are you or someone you care for challenged by the overwhelming responsibility of administering multiple medications every day? Can you be certain pills are being taken the way the doctor ordered them? Some clients I see take upwards of 15 - 20 medications daily and don't alway have a system in place to help manage this many pills. No matter how many medications you take, there should be an efficient system in place to ensure you have taken them all and to eliminate opening bottles 70+ times a week if you take 10 meds or more. A medication system can be simple for even the most complex situations. It can provide confidence that you or your loved one are taking medicine on time everytime! There are so many ways to go about setting up a system and strategies for challenges like short term memory or fine motor problems that can be built into an individualized medication management system.
If you or your loved one has medical diagnosis that limits your ability to perform this Activity of Daily Living (ADL), your insurance would likely cover the cost of services designed to ensure your optimal safety and independence. Feel free to contact me for more information on how best to get MD orders for Occupational Therapy services!
