Could It Be Lymphedema?
You may benefit from a lymphedema evaluation if you notice:
Swelling in an arm, leg, hand, foot, or another area of the body
A feeling of heaviness, fullness, pressure, or tightness
Clothing, shoes, socks, rings, or watches fitting differently
Swelling that increases as the day progresses
Changes in skin texture or firmness
Decreased flexibility or difficulty moving because of swelling
Recurrent swelling following surgery or cancer treatment
Swelling that does not completely resolve with elevation
Difficulty managing compression garments or your current swelling program
Not every type of swelling is lymphedema. A thorough evaluation helps determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether lymphedema treatment is appropriate.
Learning to Manage Lymphedema
Lymphedema is often a long-term condition, but that does not mean you should feel powerless over it.
Successful lymphedema care includes learning how to recognize changes early, use compression appropriately, incorporate movement and breathing, care for your skin, and understand what helps your particular body manage fluid most effectively.
At Wellness Rising, we want you to leave therapy with more than temporary relief. We want you to leave with knowledge, tools, and confidence.
A Whole-Person Approach
As occupational therapists, we look beyond the swelling itself.
We consider how lymphedema affects your ability to dress, walk, work, exercise, sleep, care for yourself, participate in your community, and do the things that matter to you.
At Wellness Rising, lymphedema care can also draw from other specialized approaches when appropriate:
ScarWork may be especially helpful when surgical scars, radiation changes, injuries, or other tissue restrictions affect comfort, mobility, or the way tissues move.
Somatic therapy and nervous system regulation techniques can help address stress, guarding, breath patterns, and heightened nervous system responses that may influence pain, muscle tension, body awareness, and your overall experience of living with a chronic condition.
These approaches allow treatment to address not only fluid management, but also the tissue, movement, nervous system, and functional factors that can influence how you feel and move.
Your treatment plan is developed around your body, your lifestyle, and your goals—not simply a measurement on a tape measure.
COMPASSIONATE LYMPHEDEMA CARE
Lymphedema is more than swelling. It can affect the way your body feels, the way you move, the clothing and shoes you can comfortably wear, and even how confident you feel going about your everyday life.
At Wellness Rising, lymphedema therapy is individualized, hands-on, and focused on helping you better understand and manage your condition. Treatment may include manual lymphatic drainage, compression strategies, therapeutic movement, skin-care education, and practical self-management techniques designed around your needs and your daily life.

What Is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema occurs when lymphatic fluid accumulates in the tissues because the lymphatic system is unable to move that fluid effectively. It most commonly affects an arm or leg, but swelling can occur in other areas of the body as well.
Lymphedema may develop following surgery, cancer treatment, lymph-node removal, radiation, injury, infection, or other changes affecting the lymphatic system. Some people are also born with differences in their lymphatic system that can lead to swelling later in life.
Without appropriate management, persistent swelling can sometimes lead to increasing tissue firmness, skin changes, decreased mobility, discomfort, and an increased risk of complications.
What Does Lymphedema Therapy Include?
Lymphedema treatment is about much more than simply moving fluid.
Depending upon your individual needs, therapy may include:
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
A gentle, specialized manual technique used to encourage movement of lymphatic fluid toward areas where it can be more effectively transported by the lymphatic system.
Compression Therapy
Compression garments or specialized bandaging may be used to help maintain reductions in swelling and support ongoing fluid management.
Therapeutic Exercise and Movement
Muscle movement and breathing play an important role in lymphatic circulation. Your program may include simple movements designed to support lymph flow while improving mobility and function.
Skin and Tissue Care
Healthy skin is especially important when living with lymphedema. We provide education on protecting your skin and recognizing changes that should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Self-Management Education
One of our most important goals is helping you understand your own lymphatic system. You will learn practical strategies you can use between visits and over the long term to help manage your condition.
