WHAT IS SCARWORK?
ScarWork was created by Sharon Wheeler as a manual therapy for scars and adhesions born from another type of bodywork called Rolfing or Structural Integration. Sharon created gentle mobilization techniques that improve the texture and quality of the scar you can see as well as the underlying supporting fascial structures. ScarWork is appropriate for all surgical scars, including scars from a mastectomy, breast reconstruction, breast reduction, cesarean section, heart surgery, back or neck surgery, knee or hip surgery or any type of laparoscopic surgical procedure, traumatic injury or minor accident. Burn scars and dense, complex scars from radiation called radiation fibrosis can all be effectively treated with Sharon Wheeler's ScarWork Therapy. Scars can be treated regardless of how old they are. Great emphasis is placed on the structure and nature of the connective tissue and the individual's specific scarring patterns. Also, not all surgery incisions are well aligned and can create a fascial pull that can actually result in pain or altered movement patterns in other unsuspecting parts of the body. In the process of healing, some people unfortunately are more inclined to heal with disorganized, thickened tissue that can create adhesions around the scar including latching onto nearby structures causing organ dysfunction and limitations in movement. For example, a scar can adhere to the bladder causing discomfort or urinary changes or an abdominal scar can cause back or shoulder pain.
BENEFITS OF SCARWORK
ScarWork is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can improve not only the outward look and feel of a scar (we consider that a secondary bonus!) but can improve the quality of the surrounding tissue, giving way to normal movement patterns and increased range of motion; decrease pain, pulling or discomfort; increase lost sensation; release adhesions that may be causing problems in adjacent structures or organs. My personal experience included an immediate change in how my abdominal muscles engaged when walking, squatting and climbing steps. I also regained sensation that had been impaired for over 10 years.
SCARTALK AND THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SCARS
The primary cause of a scar--whether it is from a planned surgical procedure, radiation from cancer treatment or a traumatic injury from an accident--can leave another kind of scar that deserves equal attention. Illness, accidents, planned elective surgeries, etc., can all leave an unexpected emotional impact. I haven't met a scar that didn't have a story. As a somatic therapist, I am skilled to hear the story your body holds and to compassionately hold space for the emotions that may emerge when working with a scar. Returning to and focusing on a physical remnant of an experience is bound to awaken some unprocessed emotions. Of course, this doesn't always happen and it is not a necessary part of ScarWork Therapy, but if and when emotions arise, I am fully committed to assist you with moving through them. I call this work ScarTalk.
